AUGUST 2006

This monthly feature displays trout flies from the past that just might be worth tying up once again.

FIERY BROWN

This is one of the oldest Irish patterns around, and a versatile one at that. Rogan's of Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, went to great lengths to produce this colour. The original shade was apparently obtained by the use of stale Jack-Ass urine. The correct shade should have a hint of yellow shining through.

This is a pattern that is effective throughout the whole season. Whether fished for freshwater shrimp on the point, or Sedges in the middle or top dropper position. Tie a few up this winter and give them a try in 2004

Listed below is the original dressing, but the one favoured today omits the floss tag and replaces the natural tippets with ones dyed in hot orange.
