NORSKI LAD |
| This Step By Step is courtesy of Jim Bews, Orkney |
| The original
pattern was designed by a Shetlander called Steven Brevik. It has been one of the top patterns in Orkney , Shetland, Caithness in fact most of the Highlands for wild brown trout over the last few years. |

|
| 1 Catch in your tying thread ,leaving 3-4mm of clear shank behind the eye |

|
2 Catch in some black marabou and using touching turns run down until in line with the point of the hook. Rip the tail to length. |
![]() |
3 Still winding down the way trap in 2 strands of crinkle flash (one on each side of the tail) |
![]() |
4 Trim the crinkle flash to tail length. Then last materials to catch in on the way down are a piece of silver wire and a strand of mirage medium flat tinsel. By this point your thread will be between the point and the barb. Catching in all materials on the way down will keep the body nice and flat for winding on the tinsel . |

5 In neat touching turns wind back up the body. Trim off the waste end of the ribbing wire when you reach the top. |

6 Ok this next bit is key to this pattern. Wind on the mirage tinsel in touching but not overlapping turns. This with the solid black under tying will give the body a green colouration. Next rib with the silver wire. |

|
7 Trim off all waste ends and tie in a black marabou wing. Rip the wing to the same overall length as the tail. Try to keep that 3-4 mm behind the eye clear if you can. |

|
8 Next tie in one silver holographic wing slip on each side of the wing. |

|
9 Then 3 strands of crinkle flash as an over wing. (right on top of marabou) |

|
10 Again trim off all waste ends . At this point you can change to white tying thread if you wish. Using the clean area, behind the eye , spin on some white deer hair. Aim to have the natural tips of the deer hair ½ to ¾ the length of the marabou wing. |

11 Trim the muddler head to a bell shape and leave the natural white deer tips over the wing area only. |

Tips ; Try to use the best black marabou you can as it is important that the dye does not leach into the white head. It is not one of those patterns that gets better as it gets chewed up. Vary the size and shape of the heads. In general a smaller head works best on Orkney. Although this is not the exact Original Norski it is the most used / popular dressing in Orkney at the moment. I believe the Original had a silver tinsel body and gold holo tinsel wing slips. |
