Picric Acid, an old dye now rarely used due to it's lack of availability, not to mention having a nasty habit of exploding, was once very popular amongst many Irish fly-dressers for producing some very special colours found in many authentic Irish patterns. Yellow Olives, Green Olives, Golden Olives right through to the darker Sooty Olive. Many Fly-Dressers, including myself used to try and substitute Picric Acid by using Ground Turmeric and although reasonable results could be achieved it still lacked that glowing, Golden hue that made Picric so special. That was until recently when my main supplier David Rice from the Emerald Isle itself, having obtained a legal supply of this chemical, is now producing these wonderful shades on a full range of pelts, thus giving me the opportunity to offer many Irish patterns tied once again using capes that up until now were previously unavailable. |
