CHARTREUSE CAT

This months fly comes from Orcadian, Jim Bews who's patterns have featured regularly in both Fly Fishing & Fly Tying and Trout & Salmon over the last few years. Jim is equally at home tying competition mini-lures as he is traditionals and his flies are of the highest quality.

HISTORY

This fly was designed in 2008 for fish feeding on Daphnia and Caenis when warm July water temperatures push fish into deeper water.  Although the Chartreuse Cat works very well as a searching pattern for daphnia feeders it comes into its own when targeting caenis feeders that are up on the fin. Casting this mini lure accurately across the feeding path of fish, on a Di- 7, and stripping it quickly before a fast decent has been a very successful tactic on most  of the Orkney lochs and continues to be so through 2009. One recent change to the body sees Pseudo hackle replacing straggle fritz to keep up with the latest trend in Orkneys fly tying.  With summer fish more willing to chase flys I believe it is important to have contrast and some flash in a fly .It is not an easy pattern to tie but is worth time at the vice to beat the “curse”
